Fairy Tales & Restaurants

Today we voted on our favourite wicked fairy tale characters. After we voted, we counted our total and created our own bar graphs. The Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk was the most popular in our classroom. In the afternoon, we started our restaurant menus! Some of us worked in partners and some of us worked independently. We are happy and excited to open our restaurants. We asked Mrs. Cantafio if we could make our own sandwiches one day. She told us if we do well on our assignments, we could talk about it. We're excited to be at school every single day. (Atok)! We're really excited to make our own restaurants (Jack). We're really excited to work on our readers theater plays. (Vera)

Healthy Food!

Today we learned about the four healthy food groups. First we talked about the four food groups and what belongs in each group. Then on the smart board, we sorted some foods into the proper groups. After sorting the foods, we packed a healthy lunch on the smart board. Our ending activity was a cut and sort healthy food group sheet. We worked very hard today!

Happy Dot Day!

Today we celebrated Dot Day! We read the story, "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. We learned that "making our mark" means trying our best, believing in ourselves and putting our minds to our goals.

We used special colAR paper to make our own dots.  After we were done drawing, we put them on our classroom "WOW WALL" and scanned them using the app.

The dots came alive! They moved around like crazy!

To see "The Dot" come alive at home, download colAR from the app store and scan your paper!

Enjoy our dot art!

New Math Videos

Hello Families!

Here are a few math videos that we've been singing to in class this week!
We are working on mastering the partners that make 10. This will help your child make friendlier numbers when working with difficult math problems this year. We are also working on mastering our doubles. First term outcomes for grade 2s include mastering the "Make 10 Partners" and Doubles Facts.

What If I Know My Doubles?

---Ask your child to start working on the doubles +/- 1 concepts. 6+5 ---> I know that 5+5 = 10 so one more would be 11. Or 3+4. I know that 4+4 is 8 so one less is 7.

---Ask your child to start working on the doubles +/- 2 concepts. 7+5 ---> I know that 5+5 = 10 so two more would be 12. ….Or 7+9. I know that 9+9 is 18 so two less is 16.

---You can also ask your child to "half the doubles" -- I know that 6 + 6 = 12 so 12 - 6 = 6, etc. Great for applying quick math fact knowledge.

--- Ask your child to apply their doubles to larger numbers! I know that 6+6=12 so 60+60=120 and 600+600 = 1200 (one thousand, two hundred)…... Excellent for grade 3 students to understand this concept as we start working with larger numbers into the year.

Another Great Day!

Today we had a monster meeting and then we went to music and French class.

This afternoon we talked abut the kind of person we wanted to be. We talked about being helpful, kind, respectful, responsible, honest and trustworthy.

After recess we had an art lesson and worked on our self-portraits.

Our Second Day At School

Hello Families!

We had a lot of fun today at school! In the morning we had math. We worked on our doubles. We learned the "Doubles Rap" and we also worked on counting beans and grouping them.
We went to Madame Loewen's room for French. We played a French Swatter game with some new french words.

In the afternoon, Mrs. Cantafio read us a story. It was called "Have You Filled a Bucket Today."  After the story, we made our own buckets.

These are ways we can fill buckets:

Mason: Hold the door for someone
Vera: Smile at someone
Sam: Help someone when they are hurt
Harrison: If someone drops something, pick it up for them
Coryn: Give them a smile
Jack: Hold their hand if they're sad or lonely
Taylor: Smile at someone new
Tristan: Say I love you to your family
Rylee: Say good morning to people
Sarah: If you have two of something, you can share!
Lexie: Don't interrupt others
Ethan:  Listen to someone when they talk to you
Odin: Help someone carry something
Elizabeth:  Say thank you.
Atok: Help someone out

We ended off the day, playing some math games and going to music class.
