Our First & Wonderful Google Hangout

Today we had our first Google Hangout with RVS (Roseau Valley School) in Dominion City, Manitoba. We started off by asking them if they know about Haiku poems. We shared some of our own Spring Haiku poems with them. We ended our part by giving them a challenge. We challenged them to make their own Haiku poems. After, we shared our part, RVS shared theirs.
They told us about Spine Poetry. Spine poetry is when you put the spines of books together to make a poem. It has to make sense and has to have a theme or topic. For example, if your theme is about food, all your book titles have to be related around the topic of food. RVS challenged us to make our own spine poems by next Friday. Next Friday, we will "hangout" again and share both types of poems.
Mrs. Collette told us that Morgan was going to share her spine poem with us. She was selected because it was her birthday today! We sang Happy Birthday to her! She was a little embarrassed but said thank you!
Carl, another student from RVS told us a joke. "Who is annoying and turns into a butterfly?"…Carson had guessed it! It was a chatter-pillar. .  (hahahahaha) Carson also shared a joke about a mushroom. We shared some jokes and back and forth.
In the end, we were super excited to have our first Google Hangout! We made some new friends that we will be sharing lots of conversations with!
We look forward to our next Google Hangout!

Learning About Soil

Today we learned about what makes up soil and the different types of soil! We were very excited to learn that POOP is in soil. (It's really called castings). Some other things that make up soil are: clay, sand, organic matter, humus, water, air, silt and animal castings. We also learned that all of these things make soil good for planting. Loam is the best soil to use when planting fruits, vegetables and other crops. We also found it interesting that half of soil is made up of water and air. Stay tuned for our next post!

LAKEWOOD IDOL

Every year our school hosts "Lakewood Idol." Lakewood Idol is like American Idol but we host Lakewood talents! There are no winners, losers, or grand prizes but everyone wins as they get to shine on stage!  This year all our donations went to the Children's Hospital Foundation.
We have 3 judges who are usually two students and the one and only Ace Burpee from Virgin 103 radio (used to be Hot 103).
One of the acts from last night was the "UCC" ( Ultimate Comedy Championship). Carson (from our class) along with his twin brother Cole and a friend, Tallin hosted a great comedy performance! Carson said his favourite part was when "my brother introduced me and made a comment saying : In the blue corner, Carson, a good looking guy if I say so myself...Carson the Retaliator!"

Another great act was the Crazy Popcorn show which had dancing and hula hooping.

Here are a list of some of the acts:
- What does the fox say Dance
- counting stars singing group
- Two Dogs puppet act
- Jazz and Scottish Dancing
- Kindergarten Acts: Itsy Bitsy Spider and Happy
- Gymnastics / Skipping / Dancing / Hula Hooping

We look forward to Idol every year because we like to see and celebrate peoples talents and what they come up with.
Idol also meets are fun and freedom needs and gives students the opportunity to build their self confidence.
It's also great for our school to support our friends and Lakewood family on stage.
